Research Justification Report

RESEARCH JUSTIFICATION
YEAR ONE INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH STUDIES

Research Topic: Academics, School life
Chosen area of Focus: The study into the boys and girls ratio on the school life of SST students.

1. Framing our research topic

Our chosen area of focus is “The study into the boys and girls ratio on the school life of SST students”. We have chosen this topic as most of the schools do have different ratio of girls to boys such as SST, Dunman High and Fairfield Methodist School, just to name a few. The principal  sometimes say that they have difficulties in managing their ratio of girls to boys when the school allow new students to come in. And we can’t help but agree sometimes as my school has a ratio of boys to girls, 3:1. It has been found that schools “ Being with more girls is good for everybody,” says Prof. Analia Schlosser, an economist from Eitan Berglas School of economics at Tel Aviv University. “ We find that both boys and girls do better when there are more girls in the class. But on the other hand, classes with the same gender can affect personal and social growth. Research shows that when separated for just 2 weeks, they will tend to play less with the opposite gender.
a) Possible reasons for schools to be mixed with girls and boys are because they allow both genders to mingle with each other and have a good behavior when being in front of the other. For example, a female student in a mixed school would not have a feeling of shy or embarrassment, but instead have confidence and joyfulness when having a conversation with a male student. The experiences they have when studying together in the same school will certainly be an advantage for them when they start working since both gender will be working together in the same environment. Thus, it is easy to see why the idea that boys and girls should be more benefited from attending mixed schools will have great support.
b) The advantage of having more girls than boys in class is that the girls can help the boys to be more hardworking and help with their language because studies have shown that girls are generally better inl languages than boys.
c)  Schools with both boys and girls can help students to be more attentive in class as girls can help boys to be more attentive and keep the class in order. Hence, answers to the problem is to allow schools with both boys and girls to consider the number of pupils of each gender they should allow in the school to benefit the school.

2. Reasons for choice of topic

a) We have chosen this question because we want to find out if the number of boys and girls affect the pupils’ school life and why do some schools have more boys or more girls.

b) We want to find out about the learning environment of the different genders so that we can improve on the negative sides of this topic.

c) This topic benefits schools as principals will know the number of boys or girls they should recruit to maximise the student’s potential in their studies and ensure the best for their school lives.

3. Feasibility of the research

a) There is a need for our research, as many of the school has a big difference in the ratio of girls to boys. Hence, our research can help parents who are having a hard time deciding what kind of school they should send their child into.
b)It is possible to carry out and complete the project, as there are many articles writing about this issue and we also can interview some of the students or teachers about the their opinions.
c) The proposed course of action is logical and realistic as it can be completed with the help of some students and teachers who is willing to share their opinions with us and hard work and group effort.
d) The research provide sufficient opportunity for generation of ideas, as we will constantly have to think of ways to do certain things in the project. As for analysis and evaluation of ideas, we will certainly have many opportunities to analyse information and evaluate ideas on how to go about deciding what to do next.

4.Manageability of the research
a) The timeline for the different components of the project will be decided later based on the situation then. But overall, the project will be done as quickly and carefully as we can, trying our best not to go out of point and staying as close to the topic as possible.

b) This research provides opportunity for group work as we will need to discuss a lot of matters regarding the project, and we feel that we will be more bonded after carrying out this group project.

c) We do anticipate some difficulties along the way, such as lack of information. We intend to solve this problem by gathering as much credible data as possible, finding pages that has information about this topic.

5. Accessibility of the information required
a) Information/knowledge that will be relevant to our research would be the effects of having too many girls or boys in the same school.

b) We will be obtaining this information from primary and secondary sources, depending on which one gives more reliable and useful information.

c) Some alternatives that we have thought of would be to do interviews and surveys of how students feel about their school having too many boys or girls in their schools and how it has affect them.

d) Some problems we anticipated while gathering the research materials would be that the information that we can find might not all be entirely relevant to our project and that that is already the closest piece of information among all others that we have found.
